Physical Processes in Strong Magnetic Fields of Neutron Stars

چکیده

Neutron stars have inferred surface magnetic fields of up to 10 Gauss, in the case of radio pulsars, and up to possibly 10 Gauss, in the case of Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters and Anomalous X-ray Pulsars. In fields this high, QED effects will profoundly change the characteristics of continuum radiation processes such as synchrotron emission and Compton scattering and will also allow the possibility of additional physical processes such as one-photon pair production, vacuum polarization and photon splitting. Atomic line processes will also be significantly affected by the presence of strong fields. I will review some of the properties of radiation processes in strong magnetic fields that are most relevant to pulsars, SGRs and AXPs and the role they play in models for these sources.

Neutron Star Cooling

Observation of cooling neutron stars can potentially provide information about the states of matter at supernuclear densities. We review physical properties important for cooling such as neutrino emission processes and superfluidity in the stellar interior, surface envelopes of light elements due to accretion of matter and strong surface magnetic fields. The neutrino processes include the modif...

Physics of Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars

There has recently been growing evidence for the existence of neutron stars possessing magnetic fields with strengths that exceed the quantum critical field strength of 4.4× 10 G, at which the cyclotron energy equals the electron rest mass. Such evidence has been provided by new discoveries of radio pulsars having very high spin-down rates and by observations of bursting gamma-ray sources terme...

Stable magnetic equilibria and their evolution in the upper main sequence, white dwarfs, and neutron stars

Context. Long-lived, large-scale magnetic field configurations exist in upper main sequence, white dwarf, and neutron stars. Externally, these fields have a strong dipolar component, while their internal structure and evolution are uncertain but highly relevant to several problems in stellar and high-energy astrophysics. Aims. We discuss the main properties expected for the stable magnetic conf...

Different‎ Magnetic Field ‎Distributions‎ in Deformed Neutron Stars‎

‎In this work, we review the formalism which would allow us to model magnetically deformed neutron stars. We study the effect of different magnetic field configurations on the equation of state (EoS) and ‎the ‎structure of such stars. ‎For this aim‎, the EoS of magnetars is acquired by using the lowest order constraint variational (LOCV) method ‎‎and ‎employing‎ the AV18 potential‎.‎...

Magnetic Fields in High-Density Stellar Matter

I briefly review some aspects of the effect of magnetic fields in the high density regime relevant to neutron stars, focusing mainly on compact star structure and composition, superconductivity, combustion processes, and gamma ray bursts. THE “MAGNETIC FIELD” OF “NEUTRON STARS” A large body of evidence now identifies the presence of strong magnetic fields at (or very near) the surface of neutro...
